Macau, China, Aug. 21, 2025 (Lusa) - Pirotecnia de Barbeita, based in Monção, is representing Portugal at this year's Macau International Fireworks Competition (CIFAM), which will welcome a Brazilian participant for the first time, it was announced on Thursday.
The 33rd edition, which runs from 6 September to 6 October, opens with performances by Australia (Skylighter Fireworks) and South Africa (Fireworks for Africa) on 6 September, followed by South Korea (Hwarang Art Pyrotechnic) and Austria (FIREevent) on 13 September, and the Philippines (Platinum Fireworks) and Japan (Akariya Fireworks) on 20 September.
"On 1 October, the night of the National Day of the People's Republic of China will be specially marked with firework displays by pyrotechnic companies from China [Dancing Fireworks Group] and Portugal, enriching the festive atmosphere of the National Day," reads a statement released by the Tourism Services Department (DST).
The event, which features fireworks companies from 10 countries and regions, closes on 6 October with shows by the teams from the United Kingdom (Pyrotex Fireworx) and Brazil (Vision Show).
From Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina, the Vision Show marks Brazil's debut at the event, according to the DST press release.
The 33rd edition has a budget of 18.06 million patacas (around €1.924 million), which represents a drop of around 1.1% compared to last year, the Macao Government Tourism Office told Lusa.
The six gaming operators in Macau, the main partners in the competition, contributed 18 million patacas (around €1.918 million), with the government contributing 60,000 patacas (around €6,400), the same source told Lusa.
CIFAM takes place on the waterfront in front of Macau Tower, and each show lasts 18 minutes.
