Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Lusa, RTP, RDP accuse government of attacking freedom of speech

Lisbon, Aug. 15, 2025 (Lusa) - The news departments of Lusa, RDP and RTP repudiated on Friday the expulsion of their journalists from Bissau and accused the Guinean government of a "deliberate attack on freedom of expression".

In a note of repudiation, the directors of the three Portuguese public media organisations accuse the Guinean government of "silencing journalists" in a "discriminatory and selective action" that constitutes "a deliberate attack on freedom of expression".

The government of Guinea-Bissau decided today to expel the delegations of Lusa, RTP and RDP from the country, suspend their broadcasts with immediate effect and ordered their representatives to leave the country by Tuesday.

No reasons were given for this decision.

"We consider the expulsion of our journalists to be an attack on the fundamental principles that guide journalistic activity. They are also attitudes that violate democracy and the rule of law," said the three editors-in-chief - Luísa Meireles (Lusa), Mário Galego (RDP) and Vítor Gonçalves (RTP).

In the note, they express their solidarity with the professionals from the three media organisations in Bissau, as well as "all journalists who are trying to fulfil an elementary pillar of society, which is the right to information".

The Directors of Information, therefore, demand that journalists from LUSA, RTP Radio and RTP Television be allowed to continue exercising their right to inform in Guinea-Bissau.
