Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Post office hopes to raise €9.7M from property sales

Maputo, Aug. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - The Mozambican Post Office expects to raise 706 million meticais (€9.7 million) from the sale of 39 properties from its portfolio as part of the liquidation process, according to a sale notice consulted today by Lusa.

This is the third batch of the first phase of disposals, for which bids can be submitted until 8 August for the privatisation of the properties.

Among the properties on the list are a multi-purpose building located in the centre of Maputo, valued at 519,704,728 meticais (€7.1 million), the offices of the Alto Maé post office, also in the Mozambican capital, with a base price of 15,870,000 meticais (€217,000), a multi-purpose building in the town of Nacala, in the northern province of Nampula, valued at 26,128,000 meticais (€358,000) and a multi-purpose building in the city of Chimoio, in the central province of Manica, put up for sale for 18,519,783 meticais (€254,000).

The same list of properties to be privatised also includes an apartment in the centre of Maputo, valued at 6,433,333 meticais (€88,000), a multi-purpose building in the town of Namacurra, in the central province of Zambézia, valued at 7,475,000 meticais (€102,000), a multi-purpose office building in the province of Tete, in central Mozambique, valued at 9,775,000 meticais (€134,000) and another multi-purpose office building in the district of Moatize, valued at 6,900,000 meticais (€94,000).

On 30 May, Lusa reported that Correios de Moçambique announced the permanent closure of its facilities on 1 June, following a liquidation phase that began in 2021, with all activities being transferred to Correio Expresso de Moçambique (CORRE), as the new Designated Postal Operator of Mozambique, ‘which is continuing to provide the universal postal service.’

On its official website, CORRE - Correio Expresso de Moçambique states that its shareholders are Correios de Portugal and Empresa Nacional de Correios de Moçambique.

The Mozambican communications regulator, Instituto Nacional das Comunicações de Moçambique (INCM), announced on 15 October that it had granted CORRE a Universal Postal Operator Licence, filling the void that had existed since 2021.

In May 2021, Mozambique's government approved a decree abolishing the public company Correios de Moçambique, to restructure the state business sector after several losses.

The services provided by Correios de Moçambique, the government announced at the time, would gradually be taken over by the private sector.
