Lusa - Business News - Angola: Trains start running again after three days of rioting

Luanda, Aug. 1, 2025 (Lusa) - The Luanda Railway, which resumed train services on Thursday, announced that it recorded losses of 104.3 million kwanzas (€96,000) during the three days of forced stoppage due to acts of vandalism in the Angolan capital.

In a statement, the company emphasised that train services had returned to normal across its entire network.

Early Thursday afternoon, a DMU passenger train departed from Bungo Station, bound for Viana Station, marking the start of the return to normal services on Thursday, it said.

“As a result of the three-day strike, the accumulated loss was 104.303 million Kwanzas, resulting from the stoppage of services and the vandalism of two DMU trains,” it said.

Between Monday and Wednesday, Luanda saw riots and looting during the strike called by taxi drivers, which resulted in more than 22 deaths and 197 injuries.

Videos of the destruction of shops, vandalism of property and images of citizens burning posters with the portrait of President João Lourenço circulated on social media.

At issue is the rise in fuel prices, following the withdrawal of subsidies, leading to an increase in public transport fares, which Angolan citizens consider high.
