Lisbon, July 31, 2025 (Lusa) - Wine production in the 2025/2026 wine year is expected to fall by 11% to 6.2 million hectolitres, mainly in the Douro, Lisbon and the Alentejo, according to estimates by the Vine and Wine Institute (IVV).
"It is estimated that wine production in the 2025/2026 wine year will reach a volume of 6.2 million hectolitres, 11% less than in the previous wine year," reads an information note from the IVV.
If this forecast is confirmed, the volume will be 12% lower than the average of the last five wine years.
The biggest drops will be in the Douro (-20%), Lisbon (-15%) and the Alentejo (-15%).
In all, these three regions will produce 679,000 hectolitres less than in the previous wine year.
This drop is the result of metrological instability, which has created favourable conditions for the development of fungal diseases.
As the IVV warned, until the harvest the weather conditions "will be decisive for the quantity and quality of the harvest".
