Lisbon, July 31, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of guests and overnight stays in the tourist accommodation sector increased by 2.5% and 3.1% in June, year-on-year, with total revenue rising 7.6% to €751.8 million, the INE announced on Thursday.
According to the quick statistics on “Tourist Activity” from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in June, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 3.1 million guests (+2.5% compared to the same month in 2024) and 8.1 million overnight stays (+3.1%).
During this period, it generated €751.8 million in total revenue (from all hotel activity) and €583.4 million in room revenue (from overnight stays only), representing increases of 7.6% and 7.9%, respectively, compared to the same month last year.
Although revenues continued to grow in June, INE notes that the rate slowed compared to the previous month, when year-on-year increases were 8.7% in total revenues and 8.8% in accommodation revenues.
Residents contributed to the growth in overnight stays, increasing by 5.8% (after +5.6% in May) to 2.4 million overnight stays, and non-residents (+2.0%, against an earlier -0.1% in May), totalling 5.7 million overnight stays, according to INE.
In June, the 10 main source markets accounted for 76.5% of total overnight stays by non-residents, with the British market maintaining its lead (20.3% of total overnight stays by non-residents), despite a 1.0% decrease compared to the same month last year.
Overnight stays from the German market, the second main source market in June (11.3% of the total), grew by 9.0%, followed by the North American market in third place (11.0% share), with growth of 5.5%.
Among the top 10 source markets in June, INE also highlights the growth of the Canadian market (+7.7 %) and the lower performance of the French (-8.2 %) and Brazilian (-7.5 %) markets.
In the month under review, all regions of the country recorded increases in overnight stays, with the largest increases occurring in Alentejo (+9.6 %) and the North (+6.6 %). In comparison, in Greater Lisbon (+0.1 %) and the Azores (+0.7 %) growth was “more modest”.
The Algarve accounted for 29.4% of total overnight stays, followed by Greater Lisbon (21.9%) INE details that overnight stays by residents recorded “more significant growth” in the Setúbal Peninsula (+9.9%) and the North (+8.3%), while the Centre (-3.1%) and the West and Tagus Valley (-2.9%) recorded more modest results.
In June, the average stay in tourist accommodation establishments (2.59 nights) increased by 0.6% (a 1.4 percentage-point improvement on May’s figure).
Madeira (4.51 nights) and the Algarve (3.91 nights) recorded the highest values for this indicator, while the Centre (1.73 nights) and the West and Tagus Valley (1.85 nights) registered the shortest stays.
Concerning occupancy rates in tourist accommodation establishments, the net bed occupancy rate (54.8%) rose by 0.4 percentage points in June, and the net room occupancy rate (65.1%) increased by 0.3 points.
The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at 89.5 euros (+5.4%) and the average revenue per occupied room (ADR) reached 137.4 euros (+4.9%).
The Algarve was the region that contributed most to the sector’s overall revenue (29.0% of total revenue and 28.2% of room revenue), followed by Greater Lisbon (27.4% and 28.9%, respectively) and the North (15.9% and 16.1%, in the same order).
The largest revenue increases occurred in Madeira (+17.7% in total revenue and +20.0% in accommodation revenue) and the North (+12.2% and +11.4%, in the same order). In comparison, Greater Lisbon showed the most modest growth (+1.1% in total revenue and +1.2% in accommodation revenue).
Considering all types of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, campsites and holiday camps, and youth hostels), there were 3.4 million guests and 8.9 million overnight stays in June (+2.5% and +3.9%, respectively).
