Díli, July 31, 2025 (Lusa) - Timor-Leste will run for the presidency of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30) to be held in November in Belém, Brazil.
“Timor-Leste is currently preparing to take over the leadership of the group of Least Developed Countries and will present its candidacy at COP 30 in Belém, Brazil,” said Timor-Leste’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Adão Soares Barbosa.
The ambassador was speaking to journalists after a session to raise awareness about climate change at regional and global levels at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dili.
The President of Malawi, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, currently holds the position of chair of the group of Least Developed Countries (LDC) at the United Nations.
Adão Soares Barbosa also pointed out that the 46 member countries of the group of least developed countries have already expressed their full support for Timor-Leste's candidacy.
“At this moment, we are already leading in some areas at the global level, namely in providing training to least developed countries for the preparation of their national adaptation plans and the implementation of their adaptation priorities in the context of their own countries,” he explained.
In this context, Ambassador Adão Soares Barbosa has visited several countries around the world.
“I have been given a mandate by the Conference of the Parties to provide training and guidance to all least developed countries so that they can develop and implement their national adaptation plans in their territories,” he said.
