Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Use technology to combat illegal immigration - president

Maputo, July 30, 2025 (Lusa) - Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Wednesday called on the National Migration Service (Senami) to combat regular immigration using new technologies and ongoing training.

Speaking in Maputo as part of the institution’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Chapo asked Senami to “strengthen migration control and combat illegal immigration practices at border posts, using modern technologies and ongoing training for members of the paramilitary force”.

Daniel Chapo challenged the institution to strengthen measures to control the entry and exit of foreign nationals and to monitor their stay in Mozambique, ensuring “strict compliance with the law”.

Mozambique, which shares extensive and porous borders with six southern African countries - Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Eswatini - actively manages substantial flows to facilitate authorised entries.

The Mozambican head of state also called for “energetic” efforts to combat corruption at Senami, promoting “ethical, deontological and moral values and transparency at all levels of operation.

“Ensure that only authorised entities facilitate migration documents. Citizens must deal directly with Senami, and this service operates without intermediaries. In this way, we will ensure direct, accessible and fair processes for all users of Migration,” he said.

The president instructed Senami to develop an effective strategy to map areas with the highest concentration of foreign citizens, with a view to more integrated and preventive management.

In addition, Chapo asked it to coordinate with the Civil Identification and Registry and Notary services to improve coordination measures and ensure that Mozambican documents reach only those who are legally eligible.
