Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market closes flat despite energy sector gains

Lisbon, July 21, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market closed flat on Monday, with the PSI falling 0.03% to 7,671.77 points, with telecoms provider NOS leading the losses, falling 2.09%, despite gains in the energy sector.

Of the 15 companies listed on the benchmark PSI (Portuguese Stock Index), five closed in positive territory and the remaining 10 in the red.

Leading the losses on the national benchmark index was NOS, whose shares closed down 2.09% to €3.74, minutes before reporting its results to the market.

After the market closed, NOS announced a 21.2% drop in profits in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, to €116.8 million, due to capital gains in 2024.

The group led by Miguel Almeida explained that, “excluding extraordinary effects, net income grew 18.3% to €112.5 million”.

Retailer Jerónimo Martins also posted losses of over 1%, with its shares falling 1.53% to €21.92, as did CTT, which lost 1.30% to €7.57, on the day they inaugurated a new order sorting machine at the Algoz Operational Centre in the Faro region, an investment of around €1.5 million.

The construction company Mota-Engil fell 1.27% to €4.19, while Semapa fell 1.27% to €17.14.

Ibersol fell 1.23% to €9.60, while BCP dropped 1.16% to 66 cents per share.

Going against the trend and avoiding more significant losses on the PSI were companies listed in the energy sector.

Galp Energia rose 1.80% to €16.15 on the day it announced its results to the market and disclosed details of negotiations in Namibia.

The Portuguese oil company saw profits fall 9% to €565 million in the first half. However, specifically for the second quarter of the year, Galp’s adjusted net profit rose 25% to €373 million.

It was also a positive day for the EDP group’s listed companies: the parent company rose 1.52% to €3.81, while subsidiary EDP Renováveis gained 1.60% to €10.17.

The other main European markets had a mixed day, with Spain’s IBEX-35 rising 0.30%, the British FTSE 100 adding 0.30% and Germany’s DAX advancing 0.08%. In contrast, France’s CAC-40 fell 0.31%.
