Lisbon, July 21, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of unemployed people registered at employment centres in Portugal fell by 3.8% in June, year-on-year, and by 2.5% compared to May, to 293,488, the lowest figure since July 2023, according to data from the IEFP.

According to data released on Monday by the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), at the end of June "there were 293,488 unemployed individuals registered with employment services on the mainland and in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira islands, representing 66.1% of a total of 443,860 job seekers".

This is 11,458 fewer people registered at employment centres than in June 2024. This is the lowest figure since July 2023, i.e. in almost two years, when 284,330 people were registered at employment centres, according to an analysis of the available data.

Contributing to this decline were "people registered for less than 12 months (-11,812), those looking for a new job (-9,916) and those over 25 (-8,345),” reveals the IEFP.

In a month-on-month comparison, compared to May, there are 7,417 fewer people registered at employment centres. This is the fifth consecutive month of decline, i.e. since February.

With regard to the most significant professional groups, compared to the same period last year, "there has been a decrease in unemployment in the professional groups of “administrative staff” (-14.7%), “technicians and intermediate professions” (-10.7%) and “skilled workers in industry, construction and crafts” (-7%)”, notes the institute.

On the other hand, there was an increase in unemployment “in the group of “unskilled workers” (+4.6%)”, it adds.

In regional terms, registered unemployment fell in all regions compared to the same period last year, with the sharpest decline again recorded in the autonomous region of Madeira (17%).

In a month-on-month comparison, June “saw a decline in all regions, with the overall reduction in unemployment in the order of -2.5%,” according to the IEFP.

At the end of June, there were 19,306 job vacancies in employment services across the country, corresponding to an increase in vacancies on file in the annual analysis (+6,363; +49.2%) and compared to the previous month (+1,173; +6.5%).
