Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Porto metro works to impact train service to Aveiro

Porto, July 21, 2025 (Lusa) - Authorities announced on Monday that night train services between Porto-Campanhã and Aveiro will operate under a revised schedule from Saturday until the end of the year, as crews carry out construction work on the Rubi Line of the Porto Metro.

In a statement, Metro do Porto said that the construction of an underpass at Gaia-Devesas station, as part of the Rubi Line project, will affect rail services between Porto-Campanhã and Aveiro, especially at night and on weekends, “in order to minimise the impact on passengers”.

‘To ensure service and minimise inconvenience during these restrictions,’ Metro do Porto will provide “replacement bus services for CP passengers, with stops at the following railway stations: Porto-São Bento, Porto-Campanhã, General Torres, Gaia-Devesas, Coimbrões, Madalena, Valadares, Francelos, Miramar, Aguda, Granja, Espinho, Ovar and Aveiro (for long-distance services)," it added.

Thus, on weekends from Saturday until 10 August, as well as from 20 to 28 September, rail traffic will operate under restricted conditions from 11:50 p.m. to 7:50 a.m.

On weekends from 17 August to 2 December, restrictions will be in place between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m.

On weekdays, from 11 August to 25 September (including the public holiday on 15 August) and from 26 November to 12 December (including the public holidays on 1 and 8 December), the works will require restrictions on rail traffic on that section between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Metro do Porto stated that it has coordinated the commencement of construction on an underpass at Gaia-Devesas station, which necessitates these restrictions, with Infraestruturas de Portugal and CP - Comboios de Portugal.

The Rubi Line, which is 6.4 kilometres long and has eight stations, includes a new crossing over the Douro, the D. Antónia Ferreira , Ferreirinha, bridge and authorities have reserved this bridge exclusively for the metro and pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

In Gaia, the stations planned for the Rubi Line are Santo Ovídio, Soares dos Reis, Devesas, Rotunda, Candal and Arrábida, and in Porto, Campo Alegre and Casa da Música.

Metro do Porto must complete the contract by the end of 2026, but a source from Metro do Porto has already acknowledged to Lusa that the bridge is only expected to be completed in 2027, primarily due to the completion of finishing work.

Initially, the project had a cost of €435 million. On 16 April, the president of the transport company acknowledged that the total cost of the Rubi Line, currently under construction between Casa da Música and Santo Ovídio, will increase by €50 million, and the price may still rise further.
