Lusa - Business News - Portugal: EDP Renováveis output rises 12% in H1

Madrid, July 11, 2025 (Lusa) - EDP Renováveis (EDPR) announced on Friday that its renewable energy production rose by 12% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2024.

In total, EDPR’s production reached 21.2 terawatt-hours in the first six months of this year, the company revealed in information sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).

Production in North America accounted for 60% of the total renewable electricity produced by EDPR between January and June, with generation in Europe accounting for 27% and South America 4%.

In the first half of the year, EDPR produced 18% more in North America, 46% more in South America and 6% less in Europe.

The company said in a statement sent to the CMVM that limited wind resources affected Europe’s performance, and that South America’s growth came from improved wind resources compared to the first half of 2024 and from new additions of capacity in wind and solar power in Brazil.

By type of technology, wind continues to account for the largest share of EDPR’s production (78%), but the fastest growing in the first half of this year was solar (centralised): up 132% on the same period in 2024, now accounting for 20% of the total electricity generated by the company.

Wind production fell by 1% in the same period.

In the information sent to the CMVM, the company said that the 12% increase in production in the first half of the year is “based on greater installed capacity”.

According to data released today, in the last 12 months, EDPR added gross production capacity of 3.4 gigawatts, of which 83% is in Europe and North America, and 68% is solar energy.

“Asset rotation transactions partially offset net capacity additions,” including the deconsolidation of 0.2 gigawatts in Poland during the third quarter of 2024 and 83 megawatts in Spain during the second quarter of 2025, covering wind and solar projects.

In the first half of this year alone, EDPR added 0.4 gigawatts of renewable production capacity - 161 megawatts of wind energy and 257 megawatts of solar energy.

“By region, North America accounted for 62% of additions, Europe 23%, Asia-Pacific 9% and South America 6%,” the company said.

In June, “capacity under construction was 2.3 gigawatts, supporting the expectation of capacity additions of around 2 gigawatts in 2025, in line with expectations,” according to today’s statement from EDPR to the CMVM.

EDPR will release its first-half results on 30 July.

In the first three months, it made a profit of €52 million, 24% lower than in the same months of 2024, because “non-recurring items” totalling €13 million, related to “accelerated depreciation” of the Meadow Lake IV wind project in the United States, reduced the figure.

Last year, the company posted a net loss of €556 million, which it justified with negative impacts from “non-recurring items” of €777 million, mainly related to the decision to end projects in Colombia and a “preventive decision” by Ocean Wind (a joint venture with Engie) to record an impairment of €133 million in its US business because regulatory clarity will shape offshore projects.

EDP Renováveis, based in Madrid, operates in the field of renewable energy, and the EDP Group (Energias de Portugal) majority-owns and controls it as a subsidiary.
