Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Another 896 hectares approved for new vineyards

Lisbon, July 10, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's Vine and Wine Institute (IVV) has approved 485 applications for planting new vineyards, corresponding to approximately 896.8 hectares, the institute announced on Thursday.

“The IVV granted all applications with eligible areas the requested area, totalling 485 applications corresponding to 896.793 hectares of new planting authorisations,” reads a note from the IVV.

The Verdes region (255.4 hectares), Lisbon (173.4 hectares) and Tejo (102.8 hectares) had the largest approved areas.

Madeira (3.6 hectares), Douro (4.3 hectares) and the Azores (5.6 hectares) had the smallest approved areas.

The Douro also stands out as one of the regions with the most applications awaiting acceptance (13).

An order published in February in the Diário da República states that authorities limit the granting of new planting authorisations for wine production in defined geographical areas with a designation of origin or geographical indication.

For the Douro demarcated region, the limit is 4.4 hectares, with 0.1 hectares for the production of wines with the Port designation of origin and 4.2 hectares for the production of wines with the Douro designation of origin or the Duriense geographical indication.

The remaining 0.1 hectares are intended for the production of wines that do not qualify for a designation of origin or geographical indication.

The latest tender opened 2,415 hectares for new vineyard planting authorisations.

The application period ran from 1 March to 15 April, and the tender received 502 applications, covering a total of 924.5 hectares.

This year, the area made available showed a “more significant gap” compared to the same period last year, as the area applied for lagged behind.

As the IVV pointed out, officials allocated a “substantial part of the eligible area” to future applications because applicants had not yet submitted proposals.

This situation also arose in 2016, when this procedure began, and again in 2024.
