Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon announces free overnight parking at six supermarket car parks

Lisbon, July 10, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon City Council has established a partnership with a supermarket chain to provide 335 free overnight parking spaces, spread across six car parks, for city residents upon registration, the council announced on Thursday.

The council says the partnership will make six car parks available, and three “are now available”: Belenenses, Olivais Sul and Infante D. Henrique. The council will make the other three - Carnide, Laranjeiras and Xabregas - available “by the end of the month.”

The partnership involves the Lidl supermarket chain and EMEL - Empresa Municipal de Mobilidade e Estacionamento de Lisboa (Lisbon Municipal Mobility and Parking Company) to provide 335 free parking spaces at night in car parks at stores in the city.

“Residents will be able to use them free of charge between closing time and 8:30 a.m. the following day, by signing up for this service at Lidl stores or on the EMEL website,” the council said in a statement.

The city council will publicly present this measure to increase parking availability for city residents on Friday, with the presence of the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD), at the Lidl car park of the Os Belenenses Football Club, on Avenida do Restelo.

In a statement, the council said that this is “a pioneering project” to make use of car parks that serve commercial establishments, which become available at night without requiring new investment.

“Lidl is the first major supermarket chain to join this project,” the council said.

In addition to this measure, since 19 March, Lisbon City Council has made 3,500 night-time parking spaces available in the city, in 36 car parks owned by EMEL and Telpark, located in 14 of Lisbon’s 24 parishes, for a monthly fee of €22.

The Avença Noturna scheme provides these parking spaces for city residents, and it allows a light vehicle to stay in an EMEL or Telpark car park from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays, according to information from the city council.
