Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Porto police find 30 illegal, unhealthy lodgings with foreign nationals

Porto, July 9, 2025 (Lusa) - The Porto PSP police force detected around 30 illegal lodgings in the first half of this year, and foreign nationals occupied most of them, the force said on Wednesday.

These lodgings, most of which are located in the municipality of Porto, have various irregularities, including a lack of hygiene and safety conditions, inadequate space management, ineffective pest control, and unclear contractual terms, according to the PSP.

Although most of the illegal accommodation is concentrated in the municipality of Porto, the PSP also detected some in Matosinhos, Gondomar and Póvoa de Varzim, it stressed.

Also during the first half of this year, the Foreigners and Border Control Unit of the PSP/Porto carried out 293 police operations and inspected 2,977 foreign citizens.

As a result, the police arrested 17 people in an illegal situation in the country and eight for document forgery, possession of prohibited weapons and crimes against property,  detected 185 foreign citizens with pending proceedings in the Schengen Information System (SIS), issued 74 reports for administrative offences under the Foreigners’ Law and notified 24 to leave the country voluntarily, he pointed out.
