Lisbon, July 9, 2025 (Lusa) - The number of non-resident tourists in Portugal reached 29 million in 2024, an increase of 9.3% compared to 2023, and after a rise of 19.2% in the previous year, according to data released by Statistics Portugal (INE) on Wednesday.
According to Tourism Statistics, last year, most tourist accommodation registered 34 million guests, who provided 88.3 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 4.8% and 3.8%, respectively.
Non-residents in the country accounted for 67.7% of total accommodation overnight stays. 2024 marks the year with the highest dependence on international markets since 2013, surpassing the level reached in 2017, when international markets accounted for 67.8% of the total.
Compared to 2023, dependence on foreign markets in terms of overnight stays increased by 0.7 percentage points.
The domestic market generated 32.3% of overnight stays in 2024 (28.5 million), representing a 1.7% increase from the previous year, while foreign markets accounted for 59.8 million overnight stays, reflecting an annual growth of 4.8%.
Last year, the Spanish market remained the main source of international tourists (24.7% share), growing 7.5% compared to the previous year, followed by the United Kingdom market (12% of the total), with an increase of 4.5%, and the French market (11.6% of the total), which grew by 2.3%.
The seasonality rate fell to 36.6%, reaching its lowest level since 2013. This indicator was higher for residents (40.9%) than for non-residents (34.5%), although it decreased for both groups.
As for tourist trips by residents, the number decreased by 3.2% to 22.9 million, “as a result of the dynamics of domestic travel, which declined by 4.7% compared to the previous year, reaching 19.5 million,” according to INE.
On the contrary, trips abroad increased by 6.2% compared to the previous year, reaching 3.4 million. The average expenditure per tourist on each trip increased by 14.1% compared to 2023, standing at € 276.60.
On domestic trips, residents spent an average of €176.7 per tourist per trip, 7.5% more than in 2023, while on trips abroad, the average expenditure per tourist per trip grew by 14.6% to €843.8.
