Lisboa, July 9, 2025 (Lusa) - US President Donald Trump will today receive the heads of state of five African countries, including Guinea-Bissau, which will seek aid for economic growth and the reopening of its embassy in Bissau.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting on Monday, which Lusa had already reported last week, when government sources in Bissau revealed that Trump would receive Sissoco Embaló, along with the presidents of Gabon, Mauritania, and Senegal.
The White House has indicated that the meeting in Washington will host several African presidents, and the US press anticipates the attendance of the four already mentioned, along with the president of Liberia.
The Guinean president travelled to the United States on Monday, hoping to obtain aid from the Trump administration for economic growth and the reopening of the embassy in Bissau, which the government closed following the 1998 political and military conflict, he told journalists on his departure from Bissau airport.
On that occasion, Embaló noted that the United States requires enhanced security levels in countries where it is going to establish embassies, measures he said were already underway in Guinea-Bissau.
The Guinean president stated that Guinea-Bissau now seeks renewed “substantial support” from the United States, a matter he addressed with former US President Joe Biden and which he will now resume with Donald Trump.
The meeting is expected to focus on regional security and economic opportunities that Washington may find in the critical minerals sector in West Africa.
Trump, according to a source in the US Presidency, believes that African countries offer “incredible business opportunities” with benefits for both the American people and those nations.
