Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Far-right calls for greater income tax cut for middle class

Lisbon, June 29, 2025 (Lusa) - The leader of the far-right Chega party announced on Sunday that he aims to propose a larger income tax reduction than that planned by the government for middle-class taxpayers and a deduction of housing expenses up to €850.

André Ventura presented this Chega income tax reduction project at a press conference, adding that he intends to discuss it next Friday, alongside the government’s proposal.

Under the government’s proposal for income tax relief, the authorities will apply the measure this year, with a total value of €500 million, and the reduction in rates is 0.5 percentage points for the 1st to 3rd brackets; 0.6 percentage points for the 4th to 6th brackets; and 0.4 percentage points for the 7th and 8th brackets.

André Ventura said that Chega will propose a 25 percent higher reduction than the government’s for taxpayers in the second to fifth brackets, “middle-class workers who earn just over €2,000 per month”.

“We will maintain the relief provided by the government for taxpayers in the sixth to eighth brackets and propose an increase in deductions for housing expenses up to €850,” said the president of Chega.

Journalists inquired about the overall cost of the measures proposed by Chega, and André Ventura argued that it is “within the margin” defined by the government, i.e., €500 million.

From a political point of view, he expressed confidence that parliament will reach an agreement with the parties that support the government, PSD and CDS, on reducing income tax.
