Lusa - Business News - Angola: Credit to economy rose 29% in May in annualised terms

Luanda, June 24, 2025 (Lusa) - Credit to the Angolan economy rose by 1.4 billion kwanzas (€1.3 billion) in May, or 29% year-on-year, the central bank said on Tuesday.

According to the National Bank of Angola (BNA), credit to the economy reached 6.2 billion kwanzas (approximately €5.9 billion) in May.

In the period in question, gross credit to the real sector of the economy totalled 1.6 billion kwanzas (€1.5 billion), an increase of 23.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, driven mainly by the increase in resources that the extractive industry subsector received, which grew by 189 billion kwanzas (€181.4 million).

“Meanwhile, banks granted a total of 1.3 trillion kwanzas in credit (…) to promote the real sector, representing 83.3% of total credit granted to this sector and 17.3% of the banking system’s gross credit portfolio,” the document states.

In the distribution of total credit to the real sector during the period under review, the manufacturing industry sub-sector stands out with (44.2%) and the extractive industries sub-sector with (33.7%), together with the agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fisheries sub-sectors with (221 %).

In May, gross credit to the non-financial sector stood at 7.8 trillion kwanzas (€7.4 billion), an increase of 1.1 trillion kwanzas (€1 billion), of which 87.6% represented private sector debt, between private companies and individuals, and 12.4% public sector debt, i.e. public administration and public companies, excluding debt securities.

The non-financial public sector recorded 966.9 billion kwanzas (€928.4 million) in debt, of which the public administration held 65.8% and 34.2% by public companies.

The indebtedness of private companies and individuals increased by 860.2 billion kwanzas (€826 million), rising from six trillion kwanzas (€5.7 billion) in May 2024 to 6.8 trillion kwanzas (€6.5 billion) in May this year.

The indebtedness of non-financial private companies was 5.3 trillion kwanzas (€5 billion), an increase of 782.5 billion kwanzas (€751.3 million), and the indebtedness of individuals corresponded to 1.5 trillion kwanzas (€1.4 billion), an increase of 77.6 billion kwanzas (74.5 million euros).
