Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Renewable energy target for industry, transports start at year's end

Lisbon, June 24, 2025 (Lusa) - The transitional targets for integrating energy from renewable sources into the industry and transport sectors will come into force at the end of this year.

The cab9net approved the decree-law on 29 May, and published on Tuesday in the Diário da República (Official Gazette), it sets targets for 2030 of a minimum share of 16% of renewable energy in industry and 29% in the transport sector.

These targets will remain in force until the European Union transposes its directives on the promotion of energy from renewable sources into national law.

“The industry and transport sectors, due to their relevance in energy consumption and the specific challenges they face in decarbonisation, particularly through electrification, must take on a central role in the energy transition.” It is in this context that reform RP-C21-r46: regulatory framework for renewable hydrogen, included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), lays the foundations for decarbonisation through the development of the renewable hydrogen value chain,” reads the document published today.

According to the same document, the decree-law takes effect six months after the date of its publication, a period that the government considers “reasonable” for implementation.

The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, promulgated this decree on Monday, highlighting that it implements one of the structural reforms provided for in the RRP, within the new regulatory framework for renewable hydrogen.
