Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Government promises alternatives after two ferries out of service

Praia, June 19, 2025 (Lusa) - The Cabo Verdean government said on Thursday that it was working with the municipalities of Brava and Maio islands to provide alternative maritime transport while the boats of the concessionaire CV Interilhas are out of service and undergoing repairs.

"The government recognises the difficulties that inter-island maritime transport is currently experiencing due to the breakdown of the Kriola and Liberdadi ships, which are undergoing repairs" and "is working to provide an effective response to the problems afflicting the population as soon as possible," the statement said.

The document details consultations with the mayors of the islands of Maio and Brava, ensuring that connections to the capital, Praia, will be provided days after the population protested against the chronic irregularity of transport.

Two of the four ships belonging to CV Interilhas, the concessionaire for public passenger and cargo maritime transport, were involved in accidents in February and April and have been out of service, weakening the service.

CV Interilhas is a Cabo Verdean shipowner, established in 2019, with which the Government of Cabo Verde has signed a 20-year concession contract for public passenger and cargo transport services between islands.

The company is made up of 12 shipowners, including the Portuguese ETE Group, which holds 51% of the share capital (through its subsidiaries Transinsular and Transinsular Cabo Verde), with the remainder held by 11 Cabo Verde companies.
