INPS said Wednesday Italy had 817,403 domestic workers who paid a least one month of contributions to the pensions and social security agency in 2024.
It said that was a drop of 3% with respect to 2023 for the third consecutive year that the number of domestics dropped.
It said carers for the elderly made up 50.5% of the total, outnumbering other forms of domestic worker, such as babysitters, for the first time in a process linked to Italy's ageing population.
The domestic workforce is ageing too, INPS said.
It said 44.3% are over 55 years old and 25.7% are over 60.
