Praia, June 6, 2025 (Lusa) - The digitisation of the justice system in Cabo Verde has saved 400,000 sheets of paper since January, in addition to other consumables, the government announced in a preliminary assessment of the process.
"Since its implementation in January 2025, the Justice Information System (SIJ) has enabled the digital processing of more than 8,000 case files, representing an estimated saving of 400,000 sheets of paper, as well as a significant reduction in the consumption of materials [for printers] and other operating costs," said the Ministry of Justice.
The results were announced following a meeting on Thursday between Justice Minister Joana Rosa and the state-owned companies that manage the state's computer network.
The meeting served to take "stock of the development and implementation of the SIJ" in criminal proceedings, "analysing the progress made, existing challenges and opportunities".
In addition to the savings mentioned, "the system has provided greater efficiency, since the processes, no longer being handled physically, are now managed more quickly and effectively, allowing for better allocation of time by judicial operators".
The SIJ is operational in almost all districts, except in Fogo and Brava, which will be covered later this month.
The authorities and services are planning the "digital processing of civil cases, scheduled to take place later this year". They are also discussing the reformulation of "the registration and notary systems and subsystems, to update the technological base, adapting the systems and improving the practices associated with the performance of acts".
The public entities involved in IT management are the Institute for the Modernisation and Innovation of Justice (IMIJ) and the Operational Centre for the Information Society (NOSi), a public company responsible for the entire IT network, innovation and digital services of Cabo Verde's public administration.
