Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New cars registered increased 3.6% in first five months of 2025 - ACAP

Lisbon, June 3, 2025 (Lusa) - The car market in Portugal grew by 3.6% in the first five months of this year, with a total of 116,656 new vehicles registered between January–May, according to figures released by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).

This increase in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year contrasts with the 0.2% year-on-year increase observed up to April.

The various categories of vehicles contributed differently to this evolution, with light passenger vehicles rising 4.8% from January–May compared to the same period in 2024, while light commercial vehicles fell 2.5%. Heavy vehicles registered a year-on-year drop of 8.5%.

Taking May alone as a reference, the data released on Monday in a statement by ACAP reveal that 27,043 motor vehicles were registered in Portugal in that month, an increase of 16.5% compared to the same month in 2024.

Of that total, 23,545 are new passenger cars, i.e. 18.6% more than in the same month of 2024.

Regarding the type of energy consumed by new passenger cars, ACAP points out that more than half (65.8%) of these vehicles registered from January–May were powered by other types of energy, namely electric and hybrid.

“In particular, 20.2% of new passenger cars were electric,” the same information states, adding that in May alone, electric vehicles accounted for 19.0% of the market.

In the case of light goods vehicles and heavy goods vehicles (passenger and goods), the data for May point to increases of 4.2% and 2.3%, respectively.
