Lisbon, June 2, 2025 (Lusa) - The unemployment rate stood at 6.3% in April, down 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the previous month and the same period last year, Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Monday.
According to the "Monthly Estimates of Employment and Unemployment", in April "the unemployment rate was estimated at 6.3%, 0.1 p.p. lower than in the three comparison periods: the previous month, three months earlier and the same period last year".
The labour underutilisation rate was 10.6%, according to provisional estimates by INE, lower than the previous month and three months earlier by 0.2 p.p. and lower than the same month last year by 0.4 p.p..
According to INE, in April 2025, the active population of 5.565 million "reached its highest level since February 1998".
The active population thus increased by 0.5% compared to March, 0.8% compared to January and 2.9% compared to April 2024.
The employed population, at 5.216 million, increased by 0.6% compared to the previous month, 1% compared to three months earlier and 3% compared to the same month last year.
In turn, the unemployed population of 349,000 decreased by 1.2% compared to the previous month and by 1.7% compared to three months earlier, but increased by 0.8% compared to the same month in 2024.
The inactive population (2.45 million) decreased compared to the previous month by 0.9%, three months earlier by 1% and the same month last year by 1.8%.
In April, according to INE, "the unemployment rate for women (6.9%) exceeded that for men (5.6%) by 1.3 p.p., while the youth unemployment rate, estimated in April 2025 at 19.7%, reached its lowest level since June 2023 (18.4%)".
The Institute also reported the final estimates for March, which point to an unemployment rate of 6.4%.
