HINA - Croatia to participate in Third UN Ocean Conference

ZAGREB, 29 May (Hina) - With the programme titled "Blue of Croatia", the association for the promotion of Croatian maritime heritage Cronaves from Split will participate, as Croatia's representative, participate in the Third United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference in Nice from 2 to 13 June.

The president of the association, Plamenko Bavčević, presented the programme at a press conference in Split on Wednesday and revealed that they would participate in this prestigious event with the sailing boat "Tartana", owned by the association for the revitalisation, protection, and promotion of traditional maritime heritage Molaj Cimu from Pula.

We designed the programme in collaboration with the Molaj Cimu association and the Mandrač-Tivoli Sports Fishing Society from Pula, said Bavčević, adding that there would also be a promotion of Croatia as a sustainable tourist destination at this prestigious international event.

On board the "Tartana" sailing boat, there will be an exhibition of photographs "Croatia, Homeland of the Sea", by members of the Cronaves association - Andrina Luić, Boško Lučev, and Vislav Torre.

"We made sure that the programme for the international audience highlights our country's commitment to sustainability, cultural authenticity, and maritime tradition," Bavčević noted.

The "Tartana" sailing boat was built in 1927 at the Viareggio shipyard in Italy. It has a deck 18.5 metres long and a mast higher than 20 metres, with six sails.

"Tartanas were once the most common ships in the Mediterranean, used by pirates, fishermen, and warriors. The model that will represent Croatia was primarily used for trade and coastal transport. The boat is painted in original oil-based colours and has been fully restored using original materials. There is no stainless steel, plastic, nylon, or any other materials that were not used in the 1920s," said Saša Lukić, the secretary of the Cronaves association.

At the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, a high-level delegation from the Republic of Croatia will attend the conference, along with leaders from EU countries and heads of state and ministers from all UN member states.

The presentation of Croatia with the "Blue of Croatia" programme has been supported by the Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Croatian National Tourist Board, JANAF d.d., Jadrolinija d.d., and the Pula Tourist Board.
