Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Unemployment figures fall 1.5% Y-o-Y in April - official

Lisbon, May 20, 2025 (Lusa) - The total number of unemployed registered at employment centres fell by 1.5% year-on-year in April and by 4.8% month-on-month to 313,623, according to data released  by the IEFP on Tuesday.

According to the Institute for Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), at the end of April, 313,623 unemployed people were registered with employment services in mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions, "a figure representing 67.8% of a total of 462,304 job applications".

Compared to April 2024, there are 4,708 fewer unemployed and 15,898 fewer than in March this year.

Compared to the same month last year, and in terms of absolute variation, the contributions of those registered for less than 12 months (7,967 fewer), those looking for a new job (3,528 fewer) and young people (2,612 fewer) stood out.

With regard to professional groups, the IEFP pointed out that unskilled workers (29.5%), personal services, security and sales workers (20.2%), administrative staff (10.7%) and specialists in intellectual and scientific activities (10.2%) accounted for the largest share of registered unemployed on the mainland.

In year-on-year terms, the IEFP recorded, among the most significant groups, " a decrease in unemployment in the professional groups of administrative staff (12.5%), technicians and intermediate professions (7%) and skilled workers in industry, construction and crafts  (5.1%)".

Conversely, unemployment increased in the professional groups of unskilled workers (7.2%) and plant and machine operators and assembly workers (0.2%).

Unemployment on the mainland fell by 1.2% in April, year-on-year, accompanied by the autonomous regions of Madeira (-10.7%) and the Azores (-3.6%).

At the end of March, there were 16,825 unfilled job vacancies, up 39.2% year-on-year and 8.9% month-on-month.

In the month as a whole, the IEFP received 13,593 job offers (37.0% more than in the same month last year and 9.6% less than in March), making 9,352 placements (up 16.3% year-on-year and down 2.8% month-on-month).
