Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market trading higher on Tuesday morning with EDPR leading pack

Lisbon, May 20, 2025 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market was trading higher on Tuesday morning, with the PSI at an almost 11-year high and EDP Renováveis shares leading the gains, rising 3.32% to €9.19.

At around 9:15 a.m. in Lisbon, the benchmark PSI (Portuguese Stock Index) was holding on to its opening trend and advancing 1.40% to 7,350 points, with 13 stocks rising and two falling (Ibersol, -0.44% to €9.14, and Galp, -0.43% to €13.97).

EDP Renováveis shares were followed by EDP, Mota-Engil and BCP, which were rising more than 2%, respectively 2.64% to €3.50, 2.46% to €4.66 and 2.11% to €0.64.

More moderately, shares in Sonae, Corticeira Amorim and Altri were on the up 1.92% to €1.17, 0.72% to €8.39 and 0.65% to €6.16.

Similarly, shares in CTT, NOS and Navigator were heading north 0.58% to €6.99, 0.53% to €3.76 and 0.45% to €3.58.

The other three stocks that were rising were Jerónimo Martins, Semapa and REN, 0.37% to €21.90, 0.22% to €18.22 and 0.17% to €2.88.

The main European stock markets opened higher today, pending a ceasefire in Ukraine after talks between Trump and Putin ended without progress, and US trade negotiations.

With regard to the peace negotiations for Ukraine, Monday's telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently ended with different perspectives and no progress.

In the United States, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve's non-industrial activity will be released today.

In the eurozone, preliminary consumer confidence figures for May will be published today.

In Asia, the Nikkei index on the Tokyo Stock Market closed virtually unchanged, up 0.04%, while the Hang Seng was rising 1.33% a few minutes before the close, the benchmark index on the Shanghai Stock Market was gaining 0.38% and the Shenzhen Stock Market rose 0.77%.

The People's Bank of China (PBOC, central bank) announced today a 10 basis point cut, from 3.1% to 3%, in its one-year benchmark interest rate, the LPR.

Wall Street futures are down slightly after closing Monday's session slightly higher.

Gold per troy ounce, a safe-haven asset, was down to US$3,212.79, compared to US$3,231.54 on Monday and the current all-time high of US$3,414.65, recorded on 21 April.

The price of Brent crude oil for July delivery, the benchmark in Europe, rose to US$65.58 per barrel, compared to US$65.54 on Monday.

The euro was stronger, rising to US$1.1272 on the Frankfurt currency market, compared with US$1.1235 on Monday and US$1.1509 on 21 April, a new high since 12 November 2021.
