Lisbon, May 13, 2025 (Lusa) - The strike by drivers and conductors at Portugal's incumbent passenger train operator, CP, enters its penultimate day on Tuesday in defence of pay rises and collective bargaining, a stoppage that has led to various cancellations of train services.
The strikes called by various CP unions began on 7 May and will continue until Wednesday.
Since Monday and until Wednesday, the minimum services ordered by the Arbitration Court have been adhered to.
The workers are demanding pay rises, the implementation of an agreement to restructure the pay scales and the defence of collective bargaining.
The Train Drivers' Union (SMAQ) is holding its fourth day of strike action today for overtime work, which will continue until Wednesday, while the Itinerant Commercial Review Railway Union (SFRCI) began a strike of conductors and ticket office workers this Sunday.
The partial strike of conductors and ticket office workers, which began on the 11th and ends on the 14th, runs from 5.00am to 8.30am.
Over the last week, CP - Comboios de Portugal has been warning of the disruption caused by these strikes.
On Monday, the strike by train drivers and conductors stopped 632 trains (59%) of the 1,071 scheduled until 7pm, mainly urban trains in Lisbon, CP said.
This Tuesday morning, the partial strike by conductors and ticket office workers has led to the cancellation of 178 trains out of 250 scheduled (71.2%) between midnight and 8am, according to CP data sent to Lusa.
According to the transport company, 76 of the 111 planned trains were cancelled on Lisbon's urban connections, and 31 of the 52 scheduled for Porto were cancelled.
On the regional routes, 67 trains were scheduled and 52 were cancelled.
CP - Comboios de Portugal indicated that all long-distance trains (13) were cancelled between midnight and 8am.
Contacted by Lusa this morning, Luís Bravo of the SFRCI - Sindicato Ferroviário da Revisão Comercial Itinerante, which called the partial strike, said that the strike by CP's conductors and ticket office workers, which began at 5am today and ends at 8.30am, has had 100% uptake by workers and that the 25% minimum service requirement is being met.
