Praia, May 6, 2025 (Lusa) - An annual survey on hotel chain investments in Africa ranks Cabo Verde as the fifth country on the list of companies in the sector investing in new projects.
The 17th edition of the survey entitled ‘Hotel Chain Development Projects in Africa’, by the W Hospitality group, consulted on Tuesday by Lusa, points to 16 hotels and more than 5,500 rooms in the pipeline for Cabo Verde, but without details, as the information only summarises responses from the brands themselves.
The same study shows that in the top 10 (led by Egypt), Cabo Verde and Tanzania are the countries with the lowest percentage of rooms under construction (37%) in relation to the total planned.
While it is true that there have been projects on paper for many years, according to the study, declared investment intentions in Cabo Verde have been growing since 2023 and, according to investors, half of the beds are to be built within three years - with Boa Vista one of the main islands targeted.
In 2024, the archipelago saw the opening of two new establishments: the Tui Suneo Dunas hotel on the island of Sal, with 335 rooms, and the Barceló hotel in Praia, with 80 rooms, it indicates.
The projects for Cabo Verde have, on average, more rooms than the hotels planned for the rest of the continent, mainly aimed at satisfying European demand for sun and beach resorts, according to the survey.
The survey was based on contacts with 50 hotel chains, covering 145 brands, complemented by market analysis, interviews with development managers and a survey of projects in specialised databases.
All hotel and resort projects for which contracts have been signed are considered, regardless of the stage of construction.
At the continental level, the survey points to a 13.3% increase in projected hotel capacity by 2024.
In Cabo Verde, tourism is growing and the country reached a record number of 1.2 million guests last year.
The opening of new air routes to the island of Sal in Cabo Verde is creating a ‘critical’ situation in terms of accommodation, an ‘opportunity’ for investment in hotels, said Jorge Duarte, executive director of the Vinci group's airport concessionaire, in March.
