Lusa - Business News - Angola: Cholera continues to spread, with seven deaths in last 24 hours

Luanda, April 30, 2025 (Lusa) - Cholera continues to spread in Angola, with a further 337 cases and seven deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, with Benguela province remaining the epicentre of the disease, which is spread across 17 of Angola's 21 provinces.

Of the 337 cases of cholera, 132 were reported in Benguela province, followed by Kwanza Sul (70), Luanda (50), Malanje (41), Kwanza Norte (19), Huíla (9), Bengo (6), Namibe (5), Icolo e Bengo (4) and Huambo (1).

During this period, seven people have died and another 638 have been hospitalised with cholera.

Since the outbreak began, a total of 16,719 cases and 558 deaths have been reported.

The disease is associated with poor hygiene conditions, precarious sanitation and limited access to drinking water. In addition, heavy rains and flooding in the affected areas cause contamination of drinking water sources and accelerate the transmission of cholera, especially in densely populated areas.

Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium ‘vibrio cholerae’, which causes intense diarrhoea and vomiting, and can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if not treated in time.
