Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Expo2025 'excellent opportunity' to show blue progress - Aveiro Uni

Aveiro, Portugal, April 21, 2025 (Lusa) — Amadeu Soares, director of the Centre for the Study of the Sea (CESAM) at the University of Aveiro, said today that Expo2025 is an excellent opportunity to showcase Portugal's progress in blue biotechnology.

"This is a unique chance to show our science to the world and inspire new connections about green futures for the ocean," the director of CESAM told Lusa.

According to the academic, the Portuguese pavilion "shows Portugal's progress in the green use of marine bio-resources, in the creation of new bioproducts and in ocean solutions to global challenges".

The University of Aveiro, through CESSAM, participated in the design of the Portuguese Pavilion at Expo 2025, which runs until 13 October in Japan, where more than 28 million visitors are expected.

Under the motto "The Ocean as a Global Future", the Portugal Pavilion offers visitors an interactive experience, revealing how the ocean "moulds cultures, sustains economies and is the basis of the planet's resilience".

"Our participation in Expo2025 is proof of the University of Aveiro's (UA) support for ocean knowledge, innovation on the blue biotechnology front and global cooperation," said Helena Vieira, a researcher at CESAM and team leader on the project.

CESAM "helped develop the idea and science of the Pavilion, based on the research and innovation carried out at the University of Aveiro, providing various materials such as texts, photos and videos".

Through CESSAM's materials, "global visitors will be able to see how marine beings are being used to create new drugs, cosmetics, foods and new environmental technologies, with real examples from Portuguese research and industry".

The national pavilion at Expo2025 Osaka aims to show "Portugal's leadership in the scientific and economic exploration of the ocean, highlighting its key role in the past, present and future, in building international relations and promoting sustainable development".
