ANA-MPA - DEF X-Laskaridis: We believe that Greek shipping will be able to pass on the cost of tariffs to charterers and get through this adventure more easily

The Greek shipping industry will be able to pass on the cost of tariffs to the charterers and get through this adventure more easily, Greek shipowner Panagiotis Laskaridis said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) on the sidelines of the Delphi Economic Forum X.

After noting that "the tariff regime has not yet been clarified as things change every few hours," Laskaridis estimated that there will be some effects on shipping, but these will be isolated and only in certain sectors, such as the sector of imports of finished products to America."

"Shipping has again gone through very large disruptions, world wars and large-scale recessions. Shipping, which carries over 90% of world trade, may have a temporary downturn, a temporary difficulty in certain sectors. But, in general, I don't think it will be seriously affected," he said.

Asked about the changes made to fuel regulations and changes to shipping routes due to geopolitical developments, Laskaridis said, among other things: "The two previous wars did not have a very big impact on shipping, except for tankers, whether they did legal or illegal work. For the other types of ships, we did not have a big impact."

About the fuel regulations, he said that these regulations have not been clarified yet and added: They mainly concern two things. First, to find and prove that such a fuel is the one that will succeed the current ones that are based on carbon. Research and studies are being conducted on this. [...] Once we have decided what this new fuel will be, it must also be made available. So this is not going to come out in less than 10 years. [...] We are waiting to see where the situation will stabilise.
