TIRANA, April 3/ATA/ Albania has become the 99th country to join the ICAO’s Public Key Directory (PKD).
The Ministry of Interior appreciated this as, “An important step for Albania in securing travel documents, as the 99th country to join the Public Key Directory (PKD) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)”.
“Since its establishment, the IdentiTek Company has played a key role in advancing the identification system in Albania. ICAO PKD is a global platform for the exchange of information on travel documents, assisting member countries in the verification of biometric passports. As an agency of the United Nations, ICAO cooperates with 193 countries to guarantee a secure and fast network for global air mobility”, said the Ministry of Interior.
According to the Ministry of Interior, “Albania’s membership in the ICAO PKD positions the country at a higher level of trust and cooperation in the international arena. This means that the authenticity of the Albanian passport will be recognized by all ICAO PKD member states, which significantly increases border security, helps the fight against organized crime and terrorism at a global level.”
“For Albanian citizens, the international travel experience is improved, making it easier and faster to pass through customs points. Passport verification on the network is done through confirmation of its digital certificate, which is located in the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone),” the Ministry of Interior said.
The official “Key Signing Ceremony” of the public key exchange was held in Montreal, Canada.
The Albanian delegation was represented by IdentiTek Administrator Freskida Halilaj, who signed the agreement for the integration of Albania into the global PKD system.
