ANSA - Tennis: Sinner set for one-year number one milestone

Alcaraz Madrid withdraw ensures top slot till after French Open

Italy's Jannik Sinner is set to reach the milestone of being top of the ATP men singles ranking for a whole year after his rival Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the Madrid Masters 1000 with hamstring and groin injuries.
The withdrawal means Sinner is sure to remain world number one until the end of Roland Garros, so for 52 weeks, from June 10, 2024 to June 9, 2025.
Sinner, 23, is currently serving a three-month ban for testing positive for a banned substance.
Sinner had initially been cleared of doping after it was found that he had inadvertently been tainted with the banned steroid by a trainer's massage at the Indian Wells tournament last March, but WADA reopened the case and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), so Sinner agreed to accept a short ban to close the case.
The suspension ends on May 4, in time for him to take place in the Italian Open.
