Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Power back on in capital after two days

Bissau, March 25, 2025 (Lusa) - The electricity supply was restored on Tuesday evening in the city of Bissau, after two days of blackouts caused by a backhoe.

The Electricity and Water Company of Guinea-Bissau (EAGB) said that the cable responsible for supplying the Bissau power station had been repaired.

On Monday morning, the equipment was damaged by a backhoe carrying out rehabilitation work on some streets in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, causing a general power cut that lasted until Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred in the area near the Navy barracks in the centre of Bissau and affected the cable that carries energy from the hydroelectric plant of the Organisation for the Valorisation of the River Gambia (OMVG).

EAGB kept its customers informed of the progress of the work via social media and explained that the material needed for the repair was not available in the country, but that in the meantime it had obtained a cable that eventually resolved the situation.

Since August 2024, Guinea-Bissau has been consuming energy from the OMVG project, which serves four neighbouring African countries, namely Senegal, Guinea-Conakry, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

Until then, electricity reached residents' homes from a Turkish ship off the coast of Bissau.
