Lusa - Business News - Angola: Price of diesel increases 50%, still only 30 cents a litre

Luanda, March 24, 2025 (Lusa) - A litre of diesel in Angola will cost 300 kwanzas (30 cents) from today, a 50% increase, according to the new prices from the Oil Derivatives Regulatory Institute (IRDP).

The increase in the price of diesel, which now costs the same as petrol, is part of the gradual and flexible adjustment of the retail prices of petroleum products to market levels.

The IRDP communiqué states that, in addition to the price of petrol, the sale price of light oil and liquefied petroleum gas remains unchanged.

This new increase comes after the last adjustment made in 2024, when the price went from 65 kwanzas (0.06 euro cents) to 200 kwanzas a litre.

Fuel in Angola is subsidised by the state, which took the political decision to gradually withdraw this subsidy, following the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has been the case since 2023.

When the reform of fuel subsidisation, repeatedly defended by the IMF, was launched, Angola, which is facing fuel smuggling due to low prices, was the fourth cheapest country in the world to fill up a tank with fuel.
