Lisbon, March 19, 2025 (Lusa) - Portuguese engineering company Etermar has signed its first offshore windpower contract with Ørsted of Denmark and PGE of Poland to supply more than 100 platforms in the Baltic Sea, in a deal that company officials said shows that Portugal's offshore wind industry "can compete and win beyond its borders."
The contract relates to the Baltica 2 wind farm, which has a start-up date of the end of 2027 and is to have a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW), enough to power around 2.5 million homes with renewable energy.
The collaboration between Etermar, Danish offshore giant Ørsted and PGE, Poland's largest electricity company, includes the manufacture and supply of secondary foundation structures for the largest renewable energy project in the Baltic Sea.
"This March, Etermar started the contract for the manufacture, storage and loading for shipment of more than 100 external work platforms for access to the Wind Turbine Tower (WTG)," the company said in a statement, without detailing the value of the contract.
According to the same document, this partnership could be the start of future business: "The organisations involved hope that this contract will be the starting point for a long-lasting and fruitful working relationship, and will remain attentive to future opportunities for collaboration, both between themselves and with other players."
This objective, it adds, applies not only to the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, but also to other projects under development in Europe.
"This contract is a great achievement for Etermar and a source of pride," the statement quotes Luís Machado, CEO of Etermar Energia, the unit involved, as saying. "It shows that, after almost three years of rigorous auditing, homologation and tendering processes, we were able to win the trust of Ørsted, the largest and most experienced offshore wind energy developer in the world."
Machado also emphasised that the company is "equally excited" to be working with PGE, "Poland's leading energy producer, which is spearheading change in the region's energy industry.
"More than a seal of confidence in one of the most rigorous industries on the planet, this partnership... shows that the Portuguese offshore wind industry can compete and win beyond its borders," he added.
