Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Robotic surgery suppliers see 25% rise in turnover to €150M in 2024

Lisbon, March 17, 2025 (Lusa) - ABEX and Excelência Robótica, distributors of the da Vinci robotic surgery system in Spain and Portugal, achieved a turnover of over €150 million in the Iberian Peninsula in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 25%.

In a statement, the entities indicated that they closed 2024 "with a consolidated turnover of more than €150 million, which represents a growth of 25% compared to the €120 million recorded the previous year".

According to the note, "these results reflect the expansion of robotic surgery in the Iberian Peninsula and the consolidation of the da Vinci robotic system which, in 2024, was used in 34,000 surgeries, 36% more than in the previous year," and of these, "around 3,000 have already been carried out in Portugal, which represents an exponential growth of 43% of surgical procedures with the da Vinci robotic system in Portuguese hospitals in 2024."

According to the information released, at an Iberian level, the number of da Vinci robotic systems installed has also increased by 16% - from 150 in 2023 to more than 170 in 2024 - of which 160 are in operation in Spain and 16 in Portugal.

Last year in Portugal, the companies pointed out, "there was truly exponential growth in terms of robotic surgery, with the installation of eight new da Vinci robotic systems, which literally reflects a doubling of the number of units in operation compared to 2023".

According to the statement, the distribution of these systems "reflects the growing trend towards the adoption of da Vinci robotic surgery in Portuguese public hospitals, given that 66 % of these systems are already installed in the public health service (SNS), while 34 % operate in private hospital centres".

For this year, ABEX and Excellencia Robotica foresee a further 25 new installations of the da Vinci system in Portugal and Spain.

Founded in 2016, "ABEX Excelência Robótica is a Spanish company that operates in the Iberian Peninsula for the distribution of the da Vinci and ION robotic systems, while Excelência Robótica is the Portuguese company that operates in the domestic market for the distribution of the da Vinci robotic system in Portugal," and both are part of the AB Médica group, founded in 1984, they explain in the same note.
