Lusa - Business News - Portugal: NOS announces first 5G+ call with enhanced voice quality

Lisbon, March 17, 2025 (Lusa) - NOS announced on Monday the first 5G ‘Standalone’ (5G+) call using VoNR technology, which ‘exponentially improves the quality’ of the call and harnesses the full potential of voice, according to the mobile network's engineering director.

Making the first 5G ‘Standalone’ call [which works independently of 4G] using Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) technology ‘represents a major technological breakthrough, as it manages to harness the full potential of the 5G+ network and its differentiating features, such as speed, ultra-low latency and great capacity to connect multiple devices,’ the operator said in a statement.

‘After having innovated by being the first to launch 5G and 5G+ in Portugal, we are now the first to exponentially improve the quality of calls by launching technology that allows the full potential of 5G to be realised in voice as well,‘ says NOS’ director of mobile network engineering, Judite Reis, quoted in the statement.

‘We are paving the way for faster, clearer calls with more people on each call, without losing quality,’ she said.

This technology allows for ‘superior call quality, thanks to greater audio clarity enhanced by HD Voice+, and virtually instant connection times’, explains NOS.

‘It is prepared from the outset for the integration of 5G-based functionalities such as augmented reality, virtual reality and IoT [Internet of Things] applications’ and “allows simultaneous use of voice and high-speed applications such as streaming or real-time gaming, offering a superior user experience”, according to the group.

Among the advantages of VoNR calls based on 5G+ are ‘voice quality: superior call audio clarity (HD Voice+); ultra-low latency’, which ‘allows an instant connection’ and the ‘simultaneous use of voice and high-speed applications, making it possible to be on a call and play online in a group at the same time’.

Another advantage is the greater network capacity, so that ‘more people [...] can be connected simultaneously, while maintaining the superior quality of 5G+ Voice’ and ‘lower energy consumption and better battery management’ since ‘5G+ is a more sustainable and energy-efficient network’, so that ‘each call has a smaller carbon footprint’, according to NOS.

NOS' 5G+ only uses a 5G infrastructure, both in its core and in the radio network, independent of the 4G network.
