Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Bottled gas prices 1% to 4% higher than regulator expected in February

Lisbon, March 6, 2025 (Lusa) - Bottled gas prices in February were between 1% and 4.7% higher than the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) estimate, the regulator announced on Thursday.

According to the monthly price monitoring report, for the G26 propane bottle, ‘there was a difference of 2.4%, with the advertised price higher than the efficient price by €0.769/bottle’.

For the G110 propane bottle, there was a difference of 1% or €1.196 per bottle between the advertised price and the efficient price. The discrepancy for the G26 butane bottle was 4.7%, ‘with the advertised price higher than the efficient price by €1.543/bottle’.

The organisation led by Pedro Verdelho determines the efficient monthly average price and includes components such as the price of LPG on international markets, logistics, the retail component, sea freight and port tariffs.

Over the last month, international prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) have continued to rise, albeit at a slower pace, explains ERSE. The price of propane rose by 1.9%, while the price of butane increased by 0.9% The announced price, in turn, is the average of the prices reported on the Energy One-Stop Shop by operators with a turnover of more than 1,000 bottles a year.

Taking commercial margins into account, in February there was a negative deviation of - 1.3% for the G26 propane bottle, with the announced price being €0.429/bottle below the efficient price with margins.

The same happened for the G110 propane cylinder, with a difference of -2.4%, or €2.925/bottle below the efficient price with margins.

On the other hand, the G26 propane bottle ‘registered a positive deviation of 1.1%, with the advertised price €0.383/bottle above the efficient price’.

ERSE also revealed that in March, already taking into account the trajectories in international market prices, the efficient prices are €32.45 for the G26 propane bottle, €117.05 for the G110 propane bottle and €33.08 for the G26 butane bottle.

On Wednesday in parliament, the minister for the environment and energy announced that the government would be meeting with the energy sector regulator and the Competition Authority to understand "what's going on" with prices that are almost double those in Spain and to assess the setting of maximum prices for cylinder gas.
