Lusa - Business News - Angola: Some meat imports to be banned to boost local production

Luanda, Feb. 13, 2025 (Lusa) - Angola's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, through the Institute of Veterinary Services, announced on Thursday that imports of some food products of animal origin, namely poultry, pigs and cattle, will be banned.

In the document, dated Wednesday and addressed to "importers of products and by-products of animal origin", it was announced that "licences will not be issued for the import of offal, parts of poultry, pigs and cattle", as long as there are conditions for the local production of these products, from certain dates.

As of 15 March licences will not be issued for the import of "offal, liver, kidneys, heart and lungs of bovine animals", as well as "turkey wings, chicken, duck, gizzards, heart, back, neck and liver of poultry".

In addition, pork products such as "heads, ears, snouts, tails, livers, hearts and other offal" will also be covered by the government measure, according to the same press release.

In a second phase, on 31 July, imports of "pig necks, bovine tails and heads, chicken thighs, drumsticks and turkey thighs" will be banned, it said.

This is a measure by the Angolan government to strengthen domestic production and reduce its dependence on foreign markets.
