Lisbon, Feb. 6, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's telecoms and business products developer, Altice Labs announced on Thursday that it has just won a new European patent that optimises fibre network efficiency, having submitted the same application in the United States and Brazil.
Entitled ‘Method for Configuring a FTTH Distribution Network Cel’, this innovation "improves the configuration of fibre optic network cells, optimising the use of GPON (’Gigabit Passive Optical Network‘) ports in low-density residential areas and in small and medium-sized enterprises [SMEs]", the company said in a statement.
The patent was developed "in close collaboration with Altice Labs’ customer operations".
This solution brings "significant advances in the management of fibre networks, i.e. it allows the optimisation of resources - reduction of initial costs and better use of existing infrastructure -; greater resilience - minimisation of failures and interruptions in service -; flexible expansion - dynamic adaptation to market needs with a “pay-as-you-grow” approach, avoiding waste and reducing energy consumption, explains Altice Labs.
"Recognising the global impact of innovation, Altice Labs has already submitted patent applications in the United States and Brazil," says the technology company.
In the last five years, "the company has consolidated its position as a leader in innovation, with a total of 15 patents granted in Portugal, Europe and the USA".
The technology company also cites the Inventa Barometer - Patents Made in Portugal 2024, "in which Altice Labs was ranked 1st in the telecommunications sector and 8th in the national ranking of patent applications".
