Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, Jan. 8, 2025 (Lusa) - Portugal's Association of Port Wine Companies (AEVP) estimates that in 2024 the export of wines from the Douro Demarcated Region (RDD) totalled €352 million, or 2% less than in the previous year, it was announced on Wednesday.
On the sidelines of a meeting with journalists, the association, whose members include 29 commercial companies linked to the port wine industry and trade, also revealed that sales of wines from the region - which include wines with the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Porto, PDO Douro, PDO Moscatel Douro, PDO Espumante Douro, IGP Duriense and IGP Espumante Duriense - is estimated to have totalled €616 million, down 0.5%.
As for port exports alone, the Association of Port Wine Companies (AEVP) estimates that they will totalled €66 million, down 3.5%, and total sales €362 million, down 1.1.8%.
As for Douro wine, estimates point to a 0.8% rise in sales compared to the previous year, to €232 million, and a 3.5% drop in exports, to €66 million.
The UK was the market estimated to have seen the biggest drop in value in terms of port, down 26%, with Germany down 5% and Canada down 3%. By contrast, the Danish market is estimated to have increased by 14%, followed by the Netherlands (up 6%), the US (up 5%), and Belgium and Portugal (each up 1%).
The markets in which the AEVP sees Douro table wine sales as having fallen the most are Switzerland and Germany (down 20%), followed by Angola (down 15%) and Brazil (down 8%).
Meanwhile, estimates point to increases in the sales of Douro table wines of the order of 20% in the UK, 13% in the US, 9.7% in Poland and 2.5% in Portugal.
