Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Sines refinery gets three biofuel production units worth €400M

Lisbon, Dec. 19, 2024 (Lusa) - Sines Refinery has received three units for Galp's new advanced biofuels production unit, which represents a global investment of €400 million.

"The three units for Galp's new advanced biofuels production unit arrived at the Sines Refinery yesterday [Wednesday], where they will produce aviation fuel and bio-based diesel from 2026 onwards," Galp said in a statement.

The advanced biofuels unit, which includes these reactors, involves an investment of 400 million euros, in partnership with Japan's Mitsui, and will have a production capacity of 270,000 tonnes per year.

Galp also indicated that this project will employ around 750 workers in the construction phase on average and 1,150 at peak, and create 76 permanent jobs during the operation phase.

"This unit will receive properly treated vegetable oils and animal fats and transform them into fuel used in aviation and diesel of biological origin with characteristics identical to the diesel used in combustion engines," said the company.

This will be the first advanced biofuel production unit integrated into a refining system that includes an industrial-scale green hydrogen production unit, also under construction at the Sines refinery.

The "green" hydrogen unit represents an investment of €250 million. It will have a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) of electrolysis and can produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year.

"This is a significant contribution to the transformation and growth of the industrial sector in Portugal, placing Galp at the forefront of the development of low-carbon solutions that are essential for the energy transition," said CEO Filipe Silva, quoted in a statement.
