Lisbon, Dec. 9, 2024 (Lusa) - Lufthansa Technik announced on Monday it was setting up an engine and aircraft component repair plant in Santa Maria da Feira, Aveiro. The plant will create 700 jobs and start production at the end of 2027.
"A new chapter begins today for Lufthansa Technik: for the first time in the company's history, we are building and opening our own location in Portugal," said chief operating officer Harald Gloy in a statement.
The company, which belongs to the German airline Lufthansa, didn't say how much the investment would cost, but said it had recently acquired the 230,000 square metre property in the Lusopark business park in Santa Maria da Feira, where it plans to start work in 2026.
This industrial unit will create more than 700 jobs "which interested parties will be able to apply for as early as next year", said the company, which says it has enjoyed the cooperation of the government, through the Portuguese Investment and Foreign Trade Agency (AICEP), and the city of Santa Maria da Feira.
"[This investment] represents another step towards the reindustrialisation of our country and demonstrates the strong confidence in our national infrastructures and human capital, particularly in our highly qualified engineers and technicians in the aeronautical sector," said Economy Minister Pedro Reis, quoted in the same press release.
