Lusa - Business News - Portugal: More than 50,000 Green Rail Passes sold, many new customers

Lisbon, Dec. 5, 2024 (Lusa) - The government said on Thursday that more than 50,000 Green Rail Passes have been sold since it came into force and that 60% of these passes, which allow travel on CP trains, have been sold to new customers.

In a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communication said that the sales of the pass show "the strong adherence of the Portuguese to this measure which aims to promote the use of rail transport".

As for the fact that 64% of pass users are new customers, the office led by Pinto Luz said that this "proves the success of this transport ticket, which promotes sustainability and territorial cohesion".

The government also attributes the uptake of the Green Pass to the "professionalism, dedication and commitment of the workers at CP - Comboios de Portugal".

The Green Rail Pass, which came into force on 21 October, costs €20 for 30 consecutive days of use. It can also be purchased for 60 and 90 days, for €40 and €60 respectively, and is loaded onto the CP Card, which costs €6 (€3 for students).

CP will be compensated €18.9 million per year, via a public service contract with the state, for the loss of revenue it will have with the Green Rail Pass coming into force.
