Lusa - Business News - Portugal: TikTok, Polígrafo launch media literacy campaign

Lisbon, Nov. 25, 2024 (Lusa) - TikTok announced a partnership on Monday with Polígrafo to launch a media literacy campaign in Portugal. The campaign aims to combat disinformation by "empowering users" of the social media with skills in this area.

In a statement, the social network said that this campaign is being developed "in partnership with Polígrafo, one of the leading fact-checking organisations, certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN)", and "reflects TikTok's commitment to fighting disinformation".

In short, "TikTok's media literacy initiative aims to empower users to make well-informed decisions about the content they encounter".

This campaign "includes various interactive features and resources within the platform, specifically designed to promote the consumption of accurate information and encourage a critical approach to evaluating content," says TikTok.

Among the various tools is a digital literacy app on the platform, "a dedicated information hub that provides users with guidelines for assessing the credibility of videos, with tips for distinguishing between factual and misleading content" and a "series of educational videos by Polygraph".

These are five educational videos "created by Polygraph that address essential media literacy skills, including fact-checking, identifying narratives that tend to propagate false information, analysing information sources and maintaining vigilance against disinformation," TikTok explains.

It also includes "integrated disinformation alerts: when users search for topics frequently associated with disinformation, they will be directed to relevant media literacy content, reinforcing TikTok's proactive approach to educating users" and a promotional campaign on the platform.
