Lisbon, Nov. 14, 2024 (Lusa) - According to figures from the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) released on Thursday, wind power accounted for 38% of the electricity generated in Portugal in October, a month in which renewables accounted for 78.6%.
Between January and October, 38,229 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity were generated in the country, 81.8% of which came from renewable sources.
In the first 10 months of the year, the incorporation of renewable electricity increased by 14% compared to the same period last year and contributed to a 15.7% drop in fossil fuel electricity production compared to the figures recorded in 2023.
The drop, APREN emphasised, is justified by the fall in the production of electricity from natural gas.
The association emphasised that Portugal remains the fourth European country with the highest share of renewable energy in electricity generation, behind Norway, Austria, and Denmark.
Up until October, there was an average hourly price on the Iberian Electricity Market in Portugal (MIBEL) of €54.5 per megawatt-hour (MWh), which represents a reduction of 41% compared to the same period last year.
