Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New Tagus bridge contract to include third crossing

Lisbon, July 24, 2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's minister for infrastructure announced in parliament on Wednesday that the new concession contract for the bridges over the Tagus in Lisbon will include the third crossing that will be built.

During a hearing in the Economy, Public Works and Housing committee, when asked about the concession for the 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges in Lisbon, currently awarded to the Lusoponte company, the minister said that the concession ends in 2030 and teams from the ministry are already working on the new concession contract and announced that it will include the new bridge to be built in Lisbon (Chelas-Barreiro).

‘We already have teams working on a new concession that will include the third crossing of the Tagus,’ said the minister.

In a public-private partnership, Lusoponte (controlled by the companies Mota-Engil and Vinci) is the concessionaire for the two crossings over the River Tagus in Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama bridge and the 25 de Abril bridge, until March 2030.

In May, the government approved the construction of a new airport for the Lisbon region at Alcochete Firing Range, with a view to fully replacing Humberto Delgado Airport.

It also decided to order Infraestruturas de Portugal to finalise the studies for the construction of the Third Tagus Crossing and the Lisbon-Madrid high-speed rail link.
